Introducing your puppy to a Leash

When introducing your puppy to a leash it's important to make it a positive experience! Bring your patience and lots of treats!!

Getting your puppy to walk on a leash will not happen instantly, be consistent and have fun. We send our puppies home with a Martingale Collar and leash. These collars slip easily over their head to go on, but they do tighten if your dog pulls so that they cannot slip out. This is a great safety precaution, you do not want your puppy to get off leash and into harms way.

Do not plan to start day 1 with a walk! Get puppy use to putting on and taking off the collar. Then practice leading them around in your home or yard. As they get a better understanding of what is happening, then you can venture off on short walks to get more practice. Be positive and give lots of treats to those learning puppies!

Echo & Charlie Puppies

Echo & Charlie had their litter of puppies on February 13th! They shocked us all with only one pup! A litter of one makes him a 'singleton' puppy. Having a singleton is rare, but it does happen. We have had only one other litter this size here at Bedrock. Last time, we were lucky enough to have another litter that was born only a couple days prior and that singleton was able to be raised with his 'cousins' and their mama.

Since this is currently our only litter, he doesn't have any other pups his size or age to grow up with. We are making sure that he gets lots of interaction with the people caring for him and a few trusted older dogs, including his Mama Echo. We are using stuffed toys to emulate siblings for him to climb over and around and also to use as a little competition while nursing to encourage him to switch and hunt for a open spot to nurse.

He is currently 5 weeks old and doing great! He loves to eat, plays a lot, takes plenty of naps and loves all the attention that he gets!

Working Through Resource Guarding

If you find yourself and your pup working through resource guarding, you are not alone! Here is a great article from our friends at Whole Dog Journal to help you out!

It might come as a shock when your sweet fluff of a baby dog suddenly and fiercely stakes a claim to the treats that you’ve been tossing to your adult dogs. Your dogs have always shared quite nicely with each other, and until recently, the puppy has, too. So why is he suddenly resource-guarding from his dog friends? And what can you do about it?

First, don’t panic. Resource-guarding is a natural, normal canine behavior. Sometimes referred to as “possession aggression,” resource-guarding is when a dog sends body-language signals to another dog (or human) that he is not willing to share whatever valuable item (food, treats, toy) he possesses or desires possession of.

Ideally, the guarding dog sends only low-level signals to his competitor, such as a hard stare, a freeze, hovering over the desired object, a growl, or a snarl. These appropriate, social-communication signals are intended to prevent conflict by deterring the competitor from approaching – and this often works! If, however, the target of this communication ignores the signals and continues to approach – or offers offensive social signals in return – the guarder may feel forced to escalate the intensity of his signals and may snap, lunge, or engage in actual aggressive contact (a fight).

A recent article about a wave of Parvo in Michigan for all dog owners to read and be aware. Until more is known about this illness, extraordinary caution might include avoiding walking dogs (and especially puppies) in public places in Michigan, and keeping your dogs away from other dogs. Most importantly, if you live in or have traveled through Michigan, or your dog has been exposed to dogs who live in or have been taken through Michigan recently, and your dog or puppy shows any signs of being ill with vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or lethargy, contact your veterinarian right away.

Tips for training your older puppy (6-9 months)

Here's a good article from Whole Dog Journal for those who are going through that lovely period from 6-9 months and maybe beyond. Keep up persistent training with your pups! You will be rewarded with a great mature dog.

Key items to work on:

Recall- bring out the long leash again if necessary and make sure your dog knows to come when called
Review- Keep up the training with basic commands: sit, stay, lay down, etc.
Play and Exercise- We always say a tired puppy is a good puppy! Help them get out their energy every day!

Oregon Heat Wave - Keep Those Pups Cool!

We are in our second (or maybe third?!?!) week of a crazy heat wave here in the Pacific Northwest!

Make sure you keep your dogs cool and have plenty of cold water available for them to drink. They can easily overheat if left outside too long, so keep the trips out short. This is not the time to be going for long walks in the neighborhood where even the sidewalks are hot!

These pups had the right idea to spend some playtime in the sprinkler to cool off. Then we all headed back into the AC and they settled down for a nice nap!
